If you were to Google the word Carrier Ethernet, the search results would be a lot of industry jargon that is hard to understand. If you just wanted to understand what the meaning is, or what carrier Ethernet is used for, you would have a hard time getting your mind around most of the pages on the internet. For this reason, you will find the basic outline of what carrier Ethernet is below.

To make the process simple, we could just say that carrier Ethernet allows you to have internet access. However, this will still not explain anything to you if you really want to know what it is. So, we will give you a brief bit of history.

When the use of internet first came out, it was offered on the very old dial up connection. The dial up connection was very slow, and people where paying for their internet connection by the minute. This made the whole process of internet a bit expensive, and gave the illusion that internet is more expensive than it actually is.
The problem was that the lines laid down to carry internet data were the same lines that telephone companies were using to carry voice calls. This meant that when you used the internet you had no use of your telephone. This was very frustrating to many people, which is why a new protocol was created.

It all started with the coaxial copper cable. It meant that internet connections could be faster, and more reliable. It also meant that people could use their telephone devices while they were browsing the internet. However, it also meant that service providers had to install and lay down new cables, which meant a whole new infrastructure.

Internet connections become faster and Ethernet cables went from the original copper cable to more advanced cabling technologies. The faster the internet connection became, however, the more unreadable the copper cabling became. This meant another change in infrastructure. Providers now had to lay down the newer fiber optic cabling.

By this time internet connections became more stable and wireless connections became available. Many people stuck with the old way of connecting, as the wireless technologies where not in full swing yet. At this point, internet connection speeds where already in the double digits, and providers were looking for even faster connections. This is why you are now able to find carrier Ethernet connections that offer the T series of connections. This offers you speeds from 1 Mbps, to anywhere up to 400 Mbps and beyond. This is all due to the carrier Ethernet and how it developed over time.
